The Deep by LuxDani The Deep by LuxDani
This is a concept that I've had in my head for years, and just finally I am painting it. Inspired by a photo of an iceberg, and the way it was formed reminded me of a building. And thus, this idea was born. Mermaid and all.

One thing I've learned. NEVER AGAIN will I paint on matte board. Not only does it sort of curl, the paper itself rubs when its wet and its just bad. But I'm out of canvas so I shall have to buy some more.

Icebergs freak the shit out of me. And fascinate me. Funny how that goes so well together.

Any feedback would be hugely appreciated!!

Ooo I love your concept! I'm glad you decided to paint it and show your wonderful idea! Icebergs are definitely freaky and cool at the same time. I think many things are like that though, especially things in nature that we don't often see or understand much of!

Icebergs kinda give me that creeped out, giddy feeling. So hard to explain! But at the same time they are incredibly fascinating, and photographs of them have such  a haunting effect.

Icebergs are freaky because one sank a certain unsinkable ship, and nobody ever saw it coming. ;D

This is such an incredible picture. There's... really no critique I could ever find for it! The colors, the lighting, the careful attention to composition and flow, it all turned out just beautiful. Your handling of the underwater feeling is aaawesome. Underwater/abovewater pictures are always so hard to capture (especially in tropical settings), but you nailed it. I'm also loving the general design of the iceberg itself... it looks perfectly halfway between "iceberg" and "Mermaidville. Love it!

(what I'M wondering is this: is it a city shaped to look like an iceberg, or an iceberg shaped like a city? :eyes:)

My favorite part of the picture is the mermaid, and how she, despite being so tiny compared to the HULKING iceberg, is the focus of the picture. Our eyes are always drawn to her. A very very beautiful picture, Ko, you did excellent on it!

You have no idea how much a squee'd and happydance'd when I say OHMYGOD A RIBBON'S COMMENT xD

Good! I'm afraid that the mermaid would get lost when I had to scale the image down for DevArt. I was contemplating adding more than one, but I think I'm glad that I stuck with one little mermaid.

Thanks for the sweet compliments love <3 It was sort of a weird piece for me because literally it has been in my head for years. Ever since coming across this one particular photo of an underwater iceberg (I think it was an advertisment at the time) it just stuck. It didn't change at all either, this is almost exactly what I had visualized years ago. I've never gone through this sort of experience before.

...I did not think of that. I guess all along I was working under the concept of an iceberg that looks like a city, but I cannot think of anything that would go against the concept of city that looks like an iceberg. Now that I think about it...I'm beginning to lean towards them making it look like an iceberg. Hmmm.

Yaaay! It's nice to know I leave an impression~

But yes, I think that one mermaid did the job just fine. Any more would've detracted from it, because then we'd have TWO things to focus on. That's rather awesome that you've had this idea in your head for so long, and finally got around to doing it. As a writer, I've got a hundred million scenes in my head, yet have never been able to get them drawn out. Baah. So congrats to ya! It may have taken years to get it out, but ya finally did it!

O my, this is just making my hands ache.

The depth and shadow on this is just incredible, especially because it's all blues. (Have you used any brown or green teints in there, or just plain blues?). You also really nailed the 'cold-and-deep-ocean'-feel, if you know what I mean.

I can easily imagine this idea being in your head for years. This just makes me wonder even more: like how does this city look up close, who lives there, what does the interior of those towers look like?

An incredible, thought-provoking piece. :)

Thanks Eva!

The only tubes of paint that I took out for this painting were white, black and pthalo blue (I think). I wanted that freezing cold blue, and I felt that any additional colours might ruin that effect.

Well mermaids live there :)
That's all I have figured out. The architecture is a little fuzzy. Still a lot of the random shapes of icebergs, but the towers and some other areas have carved surfaces to look like brick. "Windows" which also function as doors. The interior of the iceberg would have a main area, very vast in size, then along the walls would be entrances to many smaller rooms.
